Release Notes

Disclaimer

This *beta* release of Fork-ZyX(tm) is still a work in progress, and needs further testing and review. As such the usual disclaimers apply. No warranty, not even the implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. There is no root password. So hey- hey- hey... Let's be careful out there...

About

Fork-ZyX is a VirOS(tm) produced, alternative to the ancestor(f12) standard desktop LiveCD. Eventually it will highlight how the VirOS toolset makes it extremely easy to produce your own derivative LiveCD distribution. Themed with whatever excellent art you may happen to have. I happen to have some excellent work, and permission to redistribute it, from an artist who signs her work - Josie Wrath.

Features

Fork-ZyX differs from its ancestor, primarily in the following ways-

ZyX-LiveInstaller

This LiveCD/USB is an installable free and open source operating system distribution. In fact, with the ZyX-LiveInstaller (available under the System Tools menu), you can install the running LiveOS rebootlessly. In other words, you may seemlessly utilize your system before, during, and after the install, without ever needing to reboot.

K.A.B.L.U.I.

My preferred desktop preferences are available with the non-default user zyxuser. Selecting 'Try K.A.B.L.U.I.' from the LiveCD/USB boot menu will cause zyxuser to be automatically logged in instead of the default guest user and its ancestor based default preferences.

SELinux in permissive mode by default

"Life is too short for SELinux" - Ted Ts'o

Instead, just assume the bios of any computer connected to wireless networking hardware is being used to spy on you, by oppressive governments, foreign and domestic. It may be paranoid, but statistically I imagine a safe bet.

E-Mail

Thunderbird is the primary email application instead of Evolution.

Text Editing

GNU Emacs is included as well as the Abiword gui word processor.

Image Processing

The GNU Image Manipulation Program (gimp) is provided for image editing and processing. Inkscape is also available for creating and editing scalable vector graphics (svg) images.

No CJK fonts, or speech synthesis

For LiveCD sized space savings, some Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts are not included, nor are the large speech synthesis facilities. These may be installed after installation from the ancestor distribution repositories.

I.e. MainMenu->System->Administration->AddRemoveSoftware.

Art

Finally, and most importantly, the art and theming are from the works of Josie Wrath.
